Erik Mertens, MD, is an ophthalmologist and medical director of Medipolis Eye Centre in Antwerp (Wilrijk), Belgium. A graduate of the University of Antwerp, he completed specialized training in refractive surgery, cataract surgery, corneal transplants and presbyopia-correction techniques before founding Medipolis in 2009, the only ophthalmological center in Belgium to hold the KIWA certificate. Erik is chief medical editor of the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today, a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology and co-founder of AECOS, where he served as president of AECOS Europe from 2019 to 2021. He is the author of more than 400 abstracts and 600 scientific presentations worldwide. More recently, Erik has extended his practice into interventional glaucoma, performing canaloplasty with iTrack™ Advance.
